37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Luke 19:37-40 (ESV)
It is Time
Today is Palm Sunday, the day of the Christ's Triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The day that began the final week of Jesus' life.
Today is Palm Sunday. The day it was time...time to announce for all to know that Jesus is the Christ, Jesus is the Messiah.
The crowds were ready. The proclamation of the angels at His birth now echoed in the words of the people. From the angels proclamation at His birth, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” (Luke 2:14, ESV) to the people's proclamation at His triumphal entry, "Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” The time to fulfill the ultimate purpose for which He was born had come. It is time.
And the Pharisees knew exactly what the proclamation of the people meant. The Psalmist wrote, "Save us, we pray, O LORD! O LORD, we pray, give us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!" (Psa 118:25-26a, ESV) The people cried out when they saw the Messiah they had waited for: "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" And the Pharisees look to Jesus, the Messiah, and tell Him "rebuke your disciples." Effectively the Pharisees tell Jesus, "Tell them to stop saying you're the Messiah!" But the time had come. It is time.
Repeatedly Jesus had told others, "Tell no one what I've done. Tell no one who I am." But no longer: the time had come. If the people didn't declare that Jesus is the Messiah, then the stones would cry out: "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!"
It is time. This is the King. This is the Messiah. This is the one who came to crush the head of the serpent. (Gen 3:15) This is the one who the is the consolation of Israel that Simeon had waited for and seen. (Luke 2:25)
It is time. It is time for the Messiah to save His people from their sins. (Matt 1:21)
Let us rejoice for "Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord!" Blessed is the one who comes to save His people from their sins.
It is time.
