Maximizing Our Joy in God is What We Were Created For

Piper starts Chapter 2 with a bold claim: "Maximizing our joy in God is what we were created for."  The reality of why we are created to maximize our joy in God is because we were created to glorify God. And the way that God is most glorified in us is by us maximizing our joy in Him. That is, by reveling in knowing God, who He is, and what He does.  That is why at the heart of this claim is the reality that "God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him."

As Piper notes, "...look at what is at stake in our pursuit of joy. The glory of God is at stake! If I say that pursuing joy is not essential, I am saying that glorifying God is not essential." This is how tightly coupled our pursuing our joy in God is to our glorifying God. They go hand-in-hand.

C. S. Lewis notes in his book Reflections on the Psalms that "all enjoyment spontaneously overflows in praise...we delight to praise what we enjoy because the praise not merely expresses but completes the enjoyment." Thus, as we worship God, as we truly value Him, as we truly find enjoy who He is, it should...no, it must overflow into praise!
