Pride and Self-Pity are the Same

Chapter 4 takes on the sin of pride and self-pity head on. Notice that it is the sin (singular) of pride and self-pity because really pride and self-pity are just two sides of the same sin of self-centeredness and self-exaltation. We tend to think of pride and self-pity as a form of opposites when in reality they are two manifestations of the same underlying sin of the heart that desires to put ourself at the center. Pride (or boasting) says, "I've achieved so much I deserve to be admired, so look at me!" while self-pity says, "I've suffered so much I deserve to be given attention, so look at me!" In either case, the sin of self-centeredness is at the root.

But God is clear: He hates pride and arrogance (Prov 8:13).  But the humble -- those who are not self-centered, who do not exalt themselves -- He takes notice of. It is the humble who God gives grace to (James 4:6; Prov 3:34).

So let's begin this weekby turning the focus away from ourself and onto our God!
